An artisan is a keycap machined from metal or solid plastic, designed to complement the theme of a specific keycap project or brand. It is best seen as a piece of jewelry you add as the perfect finishing touch to a keyboard build.
The process is collaborative. I work with a designer who created a set of keycaps, and create an artisan for them which complements their work.
Most of the time we choose a row 1 single unit keycap (think escape key for example), other times we go bigger and explore what a return key artisan could look like.
Producing an artisan takes many many hours, and requires expert knowledge of machining and materials.
I collaborate with a local machinist called Salvun for the production of most of these artisans. Together we explore how to push the limits of CNC machining. We love combining raw materials with experimental finishes, making every project as unique as it deserves to be.
